If you are older (50+) with a career spanning 30 years, with the past 20 years having been self-employed as owner/operator of a couple of small companies, and you are looking to rejoin the workforce to work for someone else in a management position, how important is it to list older positions on a resume and, if so, is it necessary to include dates, positions/titles, location, responsibilities, etc?
In the scenario I previously described (age 50+, 20 years of being self-employed in a couple of small businesses, looking to work for someone else as a manager) what do you think of functional vs chronological resumes in such a scenario? I’ve heard that recruiters and hiring managers don’t typically like functional resumes because they get “suspicious” that the applicant is trying to hide something (like age, long career, etc.).
What is the best way to bring your resume to the attention of recruiters? Is direct contact appropriate or helpful?
